Our mission to redesign fashion began in Boston two years ago during the first class of Startup Institute at the Harvard iLab, where cofounders Gemma Sole and Amanda Curtis first met. Boston was an ideal environment in which to build our robust technology (most of which consumers visiting nineteenthamendment.com never see), grow our team with the country’s best talent, and validate our business model in an environment that both challenged us intellectually and supported us unfailingly.  With all of the amazing resources available to entrepreneurs in Massachusetts and with the support of the tight knit Boston startup community, we were able to “stiletto-strap” Nineteenth Amendment with under US $10,000.  Being a part of the 2013 Future Boston Accelerator and PayPal’s StartTank gave us the foundation that has made us so successful and investors like Paul English have now given us funding to grow and scale.
This past summer we were one of eight companies, of 127 applicants, chosen to participate in the first class of the NY Fashion Tech Lab.  Our team spent three months learning from fashion industry leaders like JCrew, Alex & Ani, and Macy’s, all the while living out of suitcases and traveling between Boston and New York.  The attention and success from that experience made it evident that it was time to relocate Nineteenth Amendment to New York.  Our luck was aligned when we found out in September that Nineteenth Amendment was one of six startups chosen for the Friends of eBay incubator.  As the only company to be selected for both PayPal’s StartTank and Friends of eBay, we knew we had to make NYC our permanent home.  New York is the fashion business capital of the world, and to bring Nineteenth Amendment into this arena has exponentially expanded our reach.  While we’re sad to leave the support network of Boston, we can’t wait to explore all of the fashionable opportunities New York holds for Nineteenth Amendment.
