A print can be all you need to stand out from the crowd, and no one knows this better than Aimee Kent. All about juxtaposition, Aime Kent uses abstract, colorful prints immersed in simple, comfortable silhouettes to create unique original pieces for all events and occasions. Born in Kenya and raised in Scotland, Aimee gained an Honors Degree in Textile Design at the Glasgow School of Art where she developed the skills and style behind her wearable, innovative art that flatters and empowers all modern women, regardless of where they are going. Having won multiple awards for her textile design and fashion design, Aimee is poised to become the next lifestyle aesthetic. Today we chat with Aimee about finding your patterns, and yourself, in the wild of the everyday.
How and why did you start?
For as long as I can remember it’s been my goal to be a designer of some sort, whether it be in interiors, fashion, or textiles. I have been a keen artist from as young as three years old so it was inevitable that I ended up doing something creative. It’s my aim to be a designer who crosses different genres, not just fashion. I suppose I would like to eventually be recognized as a lifestyle brand. I love creating accessories, art, textiles, and interior décor pieces too.
Where do you go and what do you do for inspiration?
I walk a lot and constantly snap away with my digital camera or smartphone. I’m particularly drawn to patterns found in my everyday surroundings….it could be the façade of a building, mosaic tiling or a metal fence. Anything can inspire me as long as it is unusual, geometric, colorful or repetitively patterned. I also love researching online, I can get lost on Google and Pinterest for hours!
What is your biggest hurdle building a brand today?
Money. It’s still early days for my brand and most of my income so far has actually come through high end commissions for private, corporate, and fashion clients looking for one-off textile collaborations. Funding is always an issue but I think you get out of something what you put in and I strongly believe my efforts will pay off eventually. I’ve worked numerous part-time jobs whilst getting my design career off the ground including lecturing, tutoring, running screen printing workshops, and even working behind a bar! It takes a long time and a lot of hard work and perseverance to make money in the design industry but I believe that persistence, passion, belief, talent, and a positive attitude can take you a long way.
What do you think about fashion today?
I think the fashion industry is very exciting today. With positive changes such as a much stronger focus on sustainability and exciting new advances in design such as wearable tech and 3D printing, the potential for creativity is stronger than it has ever been. With a platform such as Nineteenth Amendment it gives new and emerging designers like me, who perhaps can’t currently afford to hire PR agents and take part in expensive fashion weeks, the chance to get their designs out there, build their creative brands in front of an international audience and start selling. I think fashion is so online these days you could live practically anywhere and just do a bit of travel when needed. I think there has been a shift over the past few years, a sort of collective consciousness, where people are starting to care more about one another and the environment and it’s definitely starting to show in fashion.
What is your fashion philosophy?
I think fashion should be ethical, wearable, comfortable, affordable and not worn for just one season. I want to create timeless pieces with stunning prints that can be worn over and over again.
What inspired this line?
This line was inspired by my Scottish heritage and I have thrown in some subtle NYC elements….see the taxicab like grid pattern within some of the prints! I’ve incorporated elements of high rise modern block apartment architecture that has resulted in a sort of modern twist on traditional plaid textiles. The result is geometric, playful, and colorful. Although I don’t particularly like to follow the crowd, the color palette and prints have been designed taking into consideration both SS 2015 and 2016 trends to give them extra longevity….although I’d prefer them to be worn for many years to come!
Any tips and tricks of the trade?
I would say just be yourself and be an individual. I think it is important to design things that you yourself would wear otherwise you’re not giving a true representation of you and your tastes which I believe should be at the forefront of your brand. Your brand ethos should be important too. My ethos is to create cutting edge design whilst recycling, using organic and fair trade certified materials wherever possible and using eco-friendly printing processes. These are really important values for me. I think choosing the right suppliers and having good business support, whether financial, advisory or friends and family is crucial for both you and your businesses well-being.
