Austin is a city that serves as a colorful cultural fashion mecca in the heart of a cowboy-booted Texas. For Sara Largent, the designer behind FANCYFOX based in Austin, that ability to stand out and be special while also being comfortable and colorful drives her work. With a focus on fun pop prints, flattering silhouettes and spot-on detailing, Sara aims to create stories and feelings through clothes and believes that a person can be comfortable without sacrificing their own personal style. You can even see this in her glamorous photo shoots featuring every day locations with well coiffed modern day pin-ups in colorful dresses suitable for all occasions (even the grocery store!). In this Designer Spotlight, we chat with Sara about having fun, being flexible, and, of course, the importance of beautiful things.
1. How and why did you start designing?
I have wanted to design clothing since I was 7 years old but only begin in earnest about 9 years ago. I began by taking all the sewing classes I could and studying patterning, design, etc. I then spent a couple years making and selling one-of-a-kind dresses and I am now launching my first full line.
2. What is your biggest hurdle building a brand today?
Because I am self-taught and basically a one-woman show, every new venture has had its challenges, but I try to stay dedicated to learning from each challenge and I use what I have learned as I move forward.
3. What do you think about fashion today?
I like that fashion today is so flexible and a person can easily pick and choose from what is out there during any given season to create a very personal look. That makes it really fun.
4. What is your fashion philosophy?
I like to help women have fun with fashion and to wear things that make them feel comfortable and beautiful. It is fun to see someone step outside of their box, just a little, and really enjoy it. I want women to feel comfortable having fun with fashion, not just on special occasions but every day. I try to make head-turning clothes that are comfortable to wear and feel both feminine and powerful, by drawing from the things we love about vintage fashion and transforming them into accessible, modern-day wear.
5. Where do you go and what do you do for inspiration?
I am inspired by color, prints, art, movies… really I find inspiration pretty much everywhere!
6. Any tips and tricks of the trade?
Remember to stay true to your vision. While it is important to listen to and learn from others, it is even more important to listen to your own instincts.
