Designer Spotlight: Plante
Rooted in Charleston, South Carolina, sisters Becky and Leah Plante launched their nature-inspired brand only a year ago but they have already developed an aesthetic all their own. Having had an interest in fashion since childhood, these young women rely on their inherent love of nature to inspire their airy, feminine designs. Their appreciation for nature extends into the way they manufacture their clothing; all pieces are made in New York City in an eco-friendly manner, and all extra material is donated to educational non-profits. In today’s Designer Spotlight, we chated with the Plante sisters about how they came to work together and their mission to create beautiful garments by harming the earth as little as possible.
How did you start designing?
Growing up, our favorite pastime was working together creatively, whether we were making our own paper dolls as seven year-olds or styling our own photoshoots as high schoolers. Leah went on to study apparel design in college and Rebecca studied fine art, so after a few years of real-world experience in our fields, designing a line together was the natural realization of a long-time dream!
What do you appreciate about fashion today?
We love that consumers are currently interested in accessing more information about what they are buying, where it was made, who made it, and where the materials came from. I think one of the strong points of our brand’s narrative is that we make everything here in NYC, and we only use high-end materials. We strive to keep our company earth-friendly whenever possible, whether by sourcing natural materials and donating excess yardage, or using recycled paper lookbooks.
Where do you look for inspiration?
Nature! Vintage textbooks. Museums.
Any advice to give to young designers?
Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback or guidance, especially from others info in your field.
How would you describe your brand?
Fresh, natural, fluid, calm, pretty, and artistic.
