Hey Marcia! We’ve gotten to know you since you’ve joined the team, but let’s give our readers some context. When you aren’t at Nineteenth Amendment, where can you be found?

I am the Technical Designer for Nineteenth Amendment. When I am not at Nineteenth Amendment you can find me serving the local community, blogging or sketching up new designs and working on Tribes of Joseph, my personal site. I enjoy living in Brooklyn and going into the city for all of my fashion affairs. I am on a mission to change the world one stitch at a time.

What does fashion mean to you?

Freedom, the freedom of self expression.

When did you develop a love of fashion?

In Junior High School, I dealt with being bullied and my defense mechanism was to dress well. I figured if people were going to talk about me, I might as well give them something to talk about. My love of clothing soon turned into a love for fashion and design. I was already artistic so it was easy to transition into designing fashion.

How do you incorporate your own personal style with what you do?

I work in fashion so I get away with a lot of experimentation, but in that I have two golden rules:  One, I always choose one focal point per look and two, I decide to tell a story daily so my attire speaks for itself.

How would you describe your style?

Sporty, urban, chic, and comfortable.

What’s the one garment you’ll never give away?

My sequined basketball jersey. It is too fun to ever give up.

Your biggest fashion faux pas, or a regrettable purchase / style phase:

In the 8th grade my cousin and I purchased matching neon pink camo army girl outfits and matching pink timberland boots to tie it all together. I wish I could say I wore the outfit once and learned my lesson but I didn’t. Sadly it was not until midway through my freshman year of high school that I realized it was a major faux pas.

What do you do (this can be your job, business, or any other hobby you’d like to promote)?

I serve people. At my core, I really just want people to achieve their goals and dreams. As a 25th birthday gift to myself, I launched a website that encompasses everything I love: fashion, style, people and God!

Describe your evenings

Depends on the day of the week, but for the most part I can either be found hanging out with my community’s Serve and Youth leadership team or at home getting creative with my roommates.

What excites you about Nineteenth Amendment?

When I come into work at Nineteenth Amendment, I know there’s a purpose greater than a dollar sign. I get to help designers, like myself, expand, grow and gain exposure. I’m lucky because not every fashion major has the opportunity to help build the next big thing!

What spoke to you about the garment you chose to wear?

What spoke to me about these pieces was the quality of design. Both pieces are effortlessly chic, playful and very versatile. I paired the Justine Hwang Draped White Dress with the Jovan Plaid Cape for a more professional look. The combination is serious yet playful which suits my personality. What is most exciting about this look is that after work or a meeting I can take the power cape off and have dinner and drinks in the city with friends. It’s the little details that make a difference for me. I love that each piece can be mixed and matched to create many different looks.

ABOUT JOVAN, MAHOGANY

Unique, eye-catching pieces for the social butterfly with 70s glamour and Diana Ross as major influences. Inspired by the movie Mahogany, it tells the story of Tracy, a young African American aspiring fashion designer from Chicago’s inner city. The character, like the woman who wears this collection, will pursue her dreams despite adversity.

ABOUT JUSTINE HWANG

This is the first collection from young designer Justine Hwang, who recently graduated from Parsons The New School for Design. She was inspired by the lack of privacy in today’s digital age, and the anonymity of being in strangers’ photos. Blurred and pixelated photographs became the initial designs and silhouettes for the garments.
